Robert Wise directs this moody noir Western starring Robert Mitchum. When drifter cowboy Jim Garry (Mitchum) is called upon by his old friend Tate Riling (Robert Preston) to help him sort out a dispute between a group of homesteaders and cattle rancher John Lufton (Tom Tully), Garry soon recognises that his friend is in fact acting both immorally and illegally in the matter, and the two friends end up pitted against one another as Garry decides that he must stand up to Lufton and do what is right.
