F.W. Murnau, creator of silent classics 'Nosferatu', 'Metropolis' and 'Sunrise', directs this study of the fragile marriage between a country boy and a city girl. During a trip to Chicago, innocent farmer's son Lem (Charles Farrell) falls in love with and marries Kate (Mary Duncan), a streetwise but lonely waitress. After the newlyweds move into Lem's family farm in Minnesota, their honeymoon turns into a claustrophobic struggle as they contend with the bitter scorn of Lem's tyrannical father and the jealous attentions of the farm labourers.
