Colonial drama starring Hugh Grant as an English engineer who falls in love with a Bengali girl. Allan (Grant) is employed in 1930s Calcutta overseeing the construction of roads and bridges. When misfortune befalls him and he becomes ill, his boss, Narendra Sen (Soumitra Chatterjee), charitably invites Allan to stay with his family until he recovers. Allan quickly strikes up a friendship with Narendra's eldest daughter, Gayatri (Supriya Patrak), that quickly turns to romance. However, there are many obstacles for the fledgling couple to overcome; not least, their vastly different cultural upbringings and the prejudices of those around them.
