Classic 1960s realist drama that explores gender, class and race, directed by Tony Richardson and based on the play by Shelagh Delaney. After a brief relationship with a black sailor, teenager Jo (Rita Tushingham) falls pregnant which does little to appease the fraught relationship she has with her mother (Dora Bryan). When her mother marries a new man (Robert Stephens) the pair move into separate accommodation. Only when Jo befriends a gay textile student Geoff (Murray Melvin), and moves in with him, does she receive the care and support she craves. When Jo's mother returns after the failure of her marriage all three must face the reality of their social conditions.
