Certainty - Madeleine Thien

In Madeleine Thien's internationally acclaimed and powerful debut novel, two parallel stories of intense love and loss - spanning Canada, Borneo, and the Netherlands - become intertwined as her characters struggle to accept the uncertain nature of the past, as well as the future.

Madeleine Thien was born in Vancouver in 1974. She is the daughter of Malaysian-Chinese parents who immigrated to Canada. Her first novel, Certainty, was published in 2006. She has also published a collection of short stories, Simple Recipes, and is a journalist and reviewer for a number of Canadian publications. She currently lives in Montreal.
