Madeleine Thien was born in Vancouver in 1974. She is the daughter of Malaysian-Chinese parents who immigrated to Canada. Her first novel, Certainty, was published in 2006. She has also published a collection of short stories, Simple Recipes, and is a journalist and reviewer for a number of Canadian publications. She currently lives in Montreal.
