The year 2000 saw the release of Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in the UK. It was hugely successful, and even the presence of subtitles didn't discourage avid British cinema-goers. Three years on, Ubi Soft and Genki have finally released the video game equivalent for Microsoft's larger-than-life console.

When Mu Bai gives his legendary sword to his lover and fellow Wudan warrior Shu Lien, he anticipates retiring to a life of peace. However, Green Destiny - the sword in question - mysteriously vanishes, sparking an intrigue that leads to a defiant young aristocrat and her sinister mentor - Mu Bai's arch-nemesis Jade Fox. In the intricate world of 19th-century China, three master warriors must transcend the laws of space, gravity, and the human body to do battle not only their fiercest enemies, but with the conflicting forces within themselves.

It sounds compelling, and it is. But the Xbox depiction of the Ang Lee classic is much more involved with combat and action. Not that that's a bad thing of course. A martial arts fighting game, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon largely focuses on the combat element from the film offering. Armed with blade and super human jumping abilities, you must defend yourself against myriad ninjas and other sword-wielding foes by using skilful sword-fighting moves and agility. Players can assume control of Li Mu Bai, Yu Shu Lien, Jen Yu or Lo, and each character possesses unique moves, skills and weapons.

Ironically, it's a game well suited to Western shores. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for Xbox closely follows the events that transpired in the film and consequently is a linear adventure. It is, however, an adventure that is thoroughly enjoyable, particularly to fans of the film. And best of all, it's all in English.
