Historical drama based on Nobel Laureate Imre Kertsz's novel about Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. 14-year-old Gyrgy Kves (Marcell Nagy) has already seen his father lose his business and be sent to a concentration camp, and is doing his best to carry out his father's wishes to look after his stepmother in his absence. He decides to take the bus to work rather than the train, believing it to be safer, but the bus is stopped and all its Jewish passengers taken into custody. He is sent first to Auschwitz, and is later transferred to Buchenwald and finally on to Zeitz. With each move Gyrgy becomes witness to greater and greater horrors, and by the time Zeitz is finally liberated by US troops he is a ghostly shadow of his former self. The film, which features a score by Ennio Morricone, was the Official Selection at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival.
