BBC adaptation of the popular Charlotte Bronte novel. Jane Eyre (Sorcha Cusack) is orphaned at a young age and left without a penny to her name. Raised by her aunt, Mrs Reed (Jean Harvey), who abuses and mistreats her, Jane is sent to Lowood Institution where she survives six years of harsh conditions as a student and a further two as a teacher. Accepting a position as Governess, Jane moves to Thornfield Hall where she meets the taciturn Mr Rochester (Michael Jayston). Despite his terrible moods, Jane grows fond of his mysterious and passionate nature. But her hopes of happiness are soon jeopardised by a terrible secret.
