When Rebellion announced that it had bought 2000AD, along with the rights to its characters, we knew that we gamers would be in for a treat. Mainly because we knew that one of those characters was Judge Dredd. And also because we knew that Rebellion has been responsible for some great games in the past. Well, three years on, and the first of what we hope to be many Judge Dredd games is now upon us, in the form of Dredd vs Death.

As the story goes, it's the 22nd Century, and unemployment is endemic. Boredom is universal and only the Judges can prevent total anarchy. In the depths of Mega-City One, a group calling themselves the Death Cult are devising a plan to liberate the evil Dark Judges from their holding chamber in a Justice Department penitentiary. Only one guy can put a stop to the impending chaos. Can you guess who it is yet?

Rather than striving for limitless depth, as is generally the case with most games these days, Dredd vs Death delivers a simple and fun story-driven shooter that pits players against hordes of evil minions. There are weapons and there are baddies - you know what to do. Comic fans will be pleased to learn that the game features a host of popular characters, such as the female Psi-Judge Anderson and the malign Dark Judges, and that it takes place across well known locations from the comic strip, including Resyk, the Smokatorium and the Grand Hall of Justice.

Unusually for a first-person shooter, a co-op mode is available throughout, so you and a friend can take to the action together and help each other out as you fight off the hordes. There's also the inclusion of a standard multiplayer element, allowing up to four players to battle it out across a variety of game modes split-screen style.

The game is powered by a proprietary game engine called the Asura Engine, which has been designed by Rebellion to recreate the feel of graphic novels and which also includes enhanced AI and Ragdoll physics. As such, the visuals throughout remain faithful to their comic book origins, delivering an authentic and immersive 2000AD experience that keeps the action coming and doesn't take itself too seriously.
