El verdadero nombre de Anne Rice es Hovard Allen. Naci en Nueva Orleans en 1941 y fue la segunda de cuatro hermanos. Rice estudi en la Universidad de Berkeley, pero termin sus estudios en la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco, donde se gradu en Filosofa y Letras, en la especialidad de Ciencias Polticas y Escritura Creativa. En 1965 public su primera obra titulada October 4, 1948.
