Film drama set in 1958 Japan. As the government prepares to introduce a new anti-prostitution act, young Tokiko (Maki Miyamoto) is groomed to take up a place in the Fujinoya Geisha House. Eager to earn money for her poverty-stricken family, Tokiko starts by helping out as a maid, but as the days wear on she gradually learns the real nature of the work she has been chosen for.
