Gunter Grass's allegorical novel was adapted for the big screen and subsequently won Best Film at Cannes and a Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1979. The teenage Oskar (David Bennent) stopped himself growing at the age of three by an act of will. As Oskar witnesses the Nazis' rise to power he acts as a conscience to the citizens of Danzig, constantly banging his tin drum and letting out his glass shattering scream.
