Jean Renoir directs this film noir about a Coast Guard officer who falls for a married woman. Veteran Scott Burnett (Robert Ryan), who is suffering from nightmares about his time serving in World War II, encounters the attractive and mysterious Peggy Butler (Joan Bennett) on a beach and soon falls in love with her. She reciprocates, despite being married to blind painter Ted (Charles Bickford), and the two embark on an affair. Scott, however, worries that Ted is aware of his involvement with Peggy, and becomes intent on finding out for sure whether or not the man is really blind, even if it means risking his life to do so.
