Based on the novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' by Choderlos de Laclos, this lavish period epic set in decadent late 18th-century France tells the tale of Marquise de Merteuil (Annette Bening), a woman so consumed by greed and arrogance that she will stop at nothing to bring down those who do not yield to her ambitions and desires. She conspires with her former lover, Valmont (Colin Firth) to seduce innocent young bride Madame de Tourvel (Meg Tilly), so depriving the girl's suitor of the privilege of marrying a virgin. But when the brazen Valmont finds himself falling in love with his young conquest, both he and the Marquise discover the pain and ruin that true love can wreak. Overshadowed by the Stephe Frears film 'Dangerous Liaisons' (1988), also based on the de Laclos novel, the film was nevertheless a nominee at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs.
